Often called the gateway to Europe, the port city of Rotterdam is full of old-world charm. The harbor offers amazing views, and a maze of wharves and canals along with towering spires make for a beautiful sight. Take a stroll and duck into one of the pubs or eateries along the way. Only three pre World War II buildings in the city center have survived and are worth a look - city hall, St. Laurence church, and the White House. Explore the Museum Boymans van Beuningen, which houses a unique collection dating from the 14th century, or the Museum Voor Volkenkunde - home to ethnological exhibits. Exquisite architecture can be seen in many areas of Rotterdam, most notably in the Delfshaven quarter of the city - where 18th century houses are on display. Breakwater Country Park is a 106-acre former quarry situated on the coast at Holyhead. The breakwater is one of the longest in the world and the wildlife is varied, but most notable are seals and numerous species of birds including stonechat, peregrine falcon, oystercatchers, and cormorants. The breathtaking cliff top site of South Stack Cliffs boasts trails, a visitor centre, and closed circuit TV to view nesting birds. From Ellin’s Tower visitor centre you can watch puffins, fulmars, guillemots, and razorbills busy with their broods. You can also visit the Ty Mawr hut group, an Iron Age settlement near South Stack with substantial remains of 20 original circular huts. Stroll the wooded gardens of Carreglwyd, which surround a 17th century mansion. Visitors to Holyhead can enjoy the town’s natural beauty and historic attractions while having access to a great selection of interests throughout Anglesey.
